Island Peak Climbing

Island Peak Climbing

Island Peak is the most popular trekking peak in Nepal. It is also locally known by the name of Imja Tse peak. From Dingboche it looks like an island in a sea of ice. The summit is spectacular and attractive with a highly glaciated west face rising from the Lhotse Glacier. The mountain itself is the extension of the South Ridge of Lhotse peak separated by a small col. The ridge rising to the south from this point leads to the summit of Island Peak. The extension of this ridge descending south-west is the part of the normal route leads to the South Summit. From the summit of this interesting Peak all the giant mountains of Everest region like Nuptse (7,879m), Lhotse (8,501m), Lhotse Middle Peak (8,410m) and Lhotse Shar (8,383m) can be vividly seen and it makes a semi circle in the north. The views of Makalu (8475m) in the east, Baruntse and Amadablam in the south are also outstanding.

Starting from Lukla you will follow the trail through Namche Bazaar to the Gokyo Lakes and over Cho La (pass) at 5420 m. making a circuit of Tawache (6367 m.) and Cholatse (6440 m.). Then, the trail emerges into the Khumbu valley above Lobuje and continues on the main trail to Everest Base Camp and Kalapattar before making a detour to Chukkung. The trail goes further up to Lhotse and Imja glaciers to climb of Island Peak. After the climb you will return via Tengboche and Namche descending down to Lukla from where you fly back to Kathmandu. Strenuous trekking, dramatic Himalayan Mountain scenes which include four of the world's eight highest peaks: Cho Oyu (26741 ft/ 8153 m.), Makalu (27797 ft/ 8475 m.), Lhotse (27880 ft/ 8500 m.) and Everest (29021 ft/ 8848 m.), visit to Sherpa villages, homes and Buddhist monasteries and experiencing Sherpa culture and their way of life are the extra charms of the climb to Island peak.
